Understanding The Different Types Of SMTP Providers And Their Features

Understanding SMTP and how it works will take you in the long run. So, if you are planning to start a business or want to promote your business digitally, know what SMTP is and how it is going to work.

Know How SMTP Work

SMTP aka Simple Mail Transfer Protocol works as a protocol for email communication, used by mail servers to send emails from one account to a different account through the internet.
Now, SMTP works with the help of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) to build the communication between the mail sender and receiver for primary communication. The mail sender in SMTP sends the data in command strings over the reliable data stream channel order.
And the SMTP client/ initiating agent/ sender/ transmitter/ initiates the communication session. It sends out the command strings and starts the connection for the listening agency or receiver to respond with the necessary information from the SMTP server.

End-to-end SMTP

The end-to-end SMTP method is used for maintaining communication between two or more two organizations. The features of this SMTP method are-

  1. The SMTP of the client’s end initiates the communication session.
  2. The request from the client’s side waits for the SMTP of the receiver.
  3. The SMTP of the receiver receives the communication signal.
  4. End-to-end SMTP protocol works to send emails to servers from different organizations easily.
  5. When the organization needs to build communication, the end-to-end SMTP acts as the medium between them.

Store-and-forward SMTP

Unlike the end-to-end SMTP method, the store-and-forward SMTP is way more different. The store-and-forward SMTP is mainly used by organizations. The features of the store-and-forward SMTP are-
1. It is used by organizations to send emails.
2. After receiving the mail from a different organization, the server retains the mail to itself.
3. The store-and-forward SMTP model does not send mail until it retains a copy.
4. It can be used to increase the security of the organization’s server.

Mail Sending Process By SMTP

The mail-sending process by SMTP goes through some mandatory steps. Here it goes,

Composition of the mail

Mail Transfer Agent(MTA) helps in compositing the mail. It helps to send the mail to the user. A mail contains an email header and an email body. The header contains the subject of the mail, and the body has the actual content. The header is basically the envelope of the mail like a normal letter comes with a cover letter.

Submission of the mail

The client submits the mail to a server mail( Mail Submission Agent- MSA) by using SMTP on the traditional port 25 or the TCP port 587. After that, the mail goes to the Mail Transfer Agent(MTA).

Delivery of the mail

There are two parts to a mail address- domain name and recipient’s username. If the recipient’s mail address does not match the MSA will send the mail to the MTA. MTA will check the address in the particular domain first.

Receipt and Processing of the mail

Once the mail is received by the recipient, it generates a copy of the mail and the user server retains a copy of the mail.

Access and Retrieval of the mail

With the right login and password, you can access the MUA. Along with that, the MUA will be able to retrieve the stored email from the MDA.
In short, SMTP servers do a lot more work than one can imagine. And it is the best communication channel for any business.
